I bought a vacation home a couple of months ago. I would have liked to have said that it was an easy process – but it was not. This was the case even though it is a buyers market at this time. The reasons it took so long are twofold. Firstly I was looking for a specific property, and secondly I ended up buying a short sale.
Now looking for the type of property I was after was made harder by the state of the economy. I was looking for a larger lot, with an older home (possibly a foreclosure) in a pretty affluent area. My liking for a rundown property in a good neighborhood had always been good for me in the past. The problem was that many investors were also on the lookout for this type of property too. One that they could get at a bargain price, and pay for with cash – I assume to resell when the economy improved and price went up. Well, I put offers in on many such properties, but ended up losing to cash buyers whom the banks favored over those of us looking to finance.
Buying a short sale took almost exactly a year from when I put an offer in on it until it closed. There were two bank liens on the property and these had to be approved by both banks. What happened was that one would approve it – which would take perhaps 3 or more months, and then it was passed to the other bank for their approval. Once it was approved by the second bank (after a similarly long period), by then the first one had expired and the process had to start over again. This happened a couple of times.
The good thing about the lengthy short sale was that cash buyers generally could not wait that length of time and so I held on long enough and ended up getting the property. It certainly was not an easy process and right up until the final day I was not sure I was going to get it. But patience paid off , the mortgage rates stayed low, and I am now in possession of a nice vacation property at a bargain price.

New Jersey offers many exciting areas to explore while driving. The state offers places of historical interest, places of natural beauty along with established entertainment centers.
Atlantic City started off as a beach vacation spot, but is now more famous as a gambling and entertainment center. You can tour the casinos or check out one of the many shows on offer. Atlantic City is a 120 mile drive from New York City and so many people take the 2 hour drive down from there to check out the casino action. Another major city, Philadelphia is only an hours drive away.
If you drive along the coast on the Garden State Parkway to Atlantic City you will pass by the towns and beaches that make up the renowned Jersey Shore. This area has been made popular around the world by the TV show. There are three main areas that make up the Jersey Shore – the Shore Region, Greater Atlantic City, and the Southern Shore. The shore is a popular destination during the summer months.
One interesting city on the shore is Ocean Grove. This area use to be popular for revivalist meetings. Attendees would set up tents for their meetings. Many of these tents still exist and a visit to the Historical Society of Ocean Grove will educate you on the area. Walking tours in the city are popular and there are two informative history tours to enjoy.
For a more rustic tour of New Jersey head for the Delaware River and Lambertville. This is a great place to visit if you enjoy small town antiquing, art galleries and coffeeshops. This is a historical town that was formed in 1705 and many older buildings and streets survive. Of interest are the federal courthouse and the Marshall House Museum. Lamberville Station is a restored building housing a restaurant and inn. Lambertville is known as the antique capital of New Jersey and as you can imagine there are many antique stores, markets and galleries to explore.

Traveling overseas is a dream for many people and a regular reality for others. Even in a struggling world economy, the globe continues to get smaller and more people are finding ways to travel and work in remote corners of the world . Whether one is traveling for work, school, leisure or some other purpose, there are certain things that must be considered when it comes to visiting foreign countries.
The most important consideration is having appropriate travel identification and documentation. This may be as simple as carrying a passport, but it may involve having special visas or other documents. Some countries require health certificates showing inoculations against specific diseases. Anyone who plans to work while overseas needs to make sure they have the necessary documents to authorize that work.
After that, the recommendations for overseas travel vary. It’s usually a good idea to have at least some of the local currency available upon arrival, though there are usually exchange offices at most airports and ports. Many people find that purchasing travel and visitor medical insurance is important to removing worries about accidents. Visitors should check the compatibility of electrical outlets and electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops ahead of time so that they will be prepared when they land. Most people will want to have lodgings reserved and transportation arrangements made while others will want to be more spontaneous. A good travel guide book is also invaluable.

There’s a certain romance attached to rail travel. Even in this age of technological advance where speed is everything, the idea of taking time to get from place A to place B — to actually watch the miles tick away and see the changes in scenery, climate, and sky — is almost magical to many travelers. For them a train trip in canada is the best way to really see that majestic country.
Lucky for these individuals, there are a plethora of Canadian train vacations available. Most depart from major cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary , which makes it easy for foreigners to fly into the city and then board a train for their real vacation.
Rail vacations can range from an overnight excursion to an expedition that cross the country and lasts nearly a month. Many packages incorporate the incredible views of the Canadian Rockies or traverse the beautiful prairies. They can be coordinated with bus tours to see even more of the country. Most travelers will arrange to take sight seeing tours at the various stops along the way while others will choose to just wander about on their own. Tours are available for a variety of price ranges, making a railroad vacation a great option for many travelers.

Seattle is one of those iconic American cities that is predominately associated with a variety of elements. It is known as the coffee capital of the country and it is also famous for having initiated the popularity of the grunge music and cultural genre. In addition, it is widely recognized as the rainiest city in the country, however, that association is actually exaggerated. Meanwhile it certainly rains a great deal in Seattle and definitely much more than what is average for most American cities. And almost every guest in one of the Seattle hotels will be familiar with the Space Needle and Pike Street Market.
The beauty of the piers and the lure of Puget Sound are all aspects of Seattle that are commonly associated with it. In addition, the city has major sports teams such as the NFL favorite Seahawks and the MLB team the Mariners . They are the home of the former NBA team the Supersonics. The basketball team were relocated to Oklahoma and are now the Thunder. However, with that major loss and continued sports gap, Seattle remains one of the nation’s strong pro sports teams. These are just some of the most common associations to Seattle that most people have, and they are all part of what makes this great city in the Pacific Northwest so special and unique.

The oldest surviving house in the oldest part of Roxbury (a town annexed by Boston, Massachusetts, 142 years ago) is a large colonial building, the Dillaway-Thomas House, built 260 years ago. Travelers may find here a single acre, landscaped park containing views of Boston’s skyline, a fascinating area for history buffs to explore.
Located in the Roxbury Heritage State Park , in the John Eliot Square, in the city center of the town of Roxbury, which itself was founded 380 years ago, in 1630, the 18th century Dillaway-Thomas House was constructed as a parsonage for the pastor of the First church of Roxbury, the Reverend Oliver Peabody.
A centuries-old home will have many owners over the years, and they include, Martha Dillaway and later John Thomas, an American commander in the Continental Army at a time when the American Revolutionary War was underway.
The home sits in the same neighborhood in which cannons from New York’s Fort Ticonderoga were transported to Cambridge, then through Roxbury, in order to create the Fortification of Dorchester Heights , which were used to compel the British to evacuate from Boston on March 17, 1776.
For anyone staying at the hotels in Boston today, the small Roxbury Heritage State Park is a destination worth exploring, if only to see one of the markers that commemorate the neighbourhood as one of the stopping places of Henry Knox, who was responsible for moving the cannons. The marker in Roxbury is the last of 57 markers that were first placed to commemorate the trail since 1927, 83 years ago.
