South Africa is one of the most spectacular places on the planet, with an amazing richness in the earth and natural resources, a vibrant and complicated history, and an intensely lively people.  It continues to attract some of the best talents in the world, drawn to make a contribution to the artistic fabric.  Johannesburg is the center of the action here, being the largest city in the country, and one of the centers of commerce and culture in the world.  It has its share of splendid places, and for luxury hotels, Johannesburg can meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry.  Our hotels are carefully selected to offer you the very best of South Africa, so that you can rest and rejuvenate while you are having the adventure of a lifetime.

Johannesburg offers many amazing things for visitors of all ages.  There are multiple cultures and traditions in all the neighborhoods, and it is evident in the food, with a wide variety and a flair for the cosmopolitan as well as the local.  Night life is fantastic, with clubs and pubs and discos that offer a dazzling social scene as well as heart-thumping music played by master musicians and savvy djs.  There is also a very powerful visual arts community here, some drawing on traditions that are thousands of years old, and some with their antennae into next week.  For video, it will be worth keeping an eye on Kai Lossgott, who has some spectacular things going on.

He was born in Germany but grew up here, and has degrees in art, journalism, and creative writing.  Kai Lossgott has multiple personas, as a writer, a teacher, and a visual artist.  In the art realm, his work is a combination of video and site-specific performance.  One of his recent works, nothing with skin is blind, is a departure even from these forms, working instead with biological material, or more specifically leaves.  He creates small markings that do not penetrate all the way through the surface, but when show against the light, reveal that the markings create words and symbols.  It’s a remarkable effect, and his videos demonstrate a contact with the sublime, and his work will be interesting to observe as this restless artist moves from one form into another with a certain confidence.
