The Balearic Islands of Spain have an identity and personality unique to themselves. The four main islands are all popular travel destinations, though the offerings of each will most likely appeal to select crowds. Of course a complete tour of all the islands is a common way to fully explore this charming mix of culture and scenery, though most people will find a strong connection to one of the Islands and prefer it for their vacations. Every year international tourists flood the islands with activity and sightseeing, and quickly fill available rooms at the best Balearic hotels.
Mallorca is the main Island of the Balearics, offering miles of beautiful beaches and also mountains, lakes and rugged landscapes. It is the preferred home of many celebrities and a hot spot of tourist activity. Ibiza is one of the smaller islands, and is approximately 90 kilometers off the East coast of Spain. Though small it is mighty in its appeal to entertainment and nightclub seeking tourists. Commonly known as the “clubbing” island, it is credited with having invented the rave. This magical paradise is only 45 kms wide and 25 kms long and is as well known for its beaches, crystal clear water and magnificent views as it is for its legendary nightlife. Many people enjoy the short ferry trip from this Island that lands them in a tiny bohemian mecca on Formentera. This little Island offers peace and serenity after a crazy night of club hopping, dancing and partying at its neighbor.
While the islands, particularly the larger main ones are extremely popular to tourists, they have retained their beauty and charm. There are many high-rise buildings amidst the beautiful beaches and scenery that give way to the rich history they embody. Gothic cathedrals and Stone Age ruins remain intact and get the attention of many sight seers who enjoy walking through the ancient fishing villages, citrus orchards and numerous olive and almond groves. The rural retreats are endless and are loved by locals and international travelers alike.
